3. Spectrum of Regularly Performed Surgical Procedures

The Department of General Surgery routinely performs a wide spectrum of elective and emergency surgical procedures across both campuses, reflecting comprehensive tertiary-level surgical care. Regularly performed surgeries include laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy, appendicectomy (open and laparoscopic), inguinal and ventral hernia repairs (including TAPP and IPOM Plus techniques), hydrocele surgery, orchidopexy, varicose vein surgery, hemorrhoidectomy, fistulectomy, fissure surgery, breast lump excisions, modified radical mastectomy, thyroid surgeries (hemithyroidectomy and total thyroidectomy), emergency laparotomies for perforation and obstruction, bowel resections and anastomosis, stoma creation and closure, trauma-related injury repairs, abscess drainage, and soft tissue procedures.

The department has also strengthened its advanced capabilities with the introduction of choledochoscopy-assisted procedures, negative pressure wound therapy applications, and vessel-sealing technology for both open and minimally invasive operations. The steady increase in minimally invasive procedures reflects the department’s transition toward modern, patient-centric surgical practice with reduced postoperative morbidity and shorter hospital stays.

4. Expansion of Minimal Access Surgery

The department significantly strengthened its minimally invasive surgical program, incorporating advanced laparoscopic procedures such as:

  • IPOM Plus
  • Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia – TAPP Repair
  • Introduction of emergency laparoscopic procedures
  • Laparoscopic CBD exploration
  • Laparoscopic Sub-diaphragmatic abscess
  • Laparoscopic Appendicular Abscess
  • SEPS

This expansion reflects a strategic commitment to modern surgical care with reduced morbidity and faster recovery.

5. Infrastructure Development & Equipment Enhancement

To support advanced surgical services, the department upgraded its infrastructure with:

  • Wolf 4K Laparoscopic Set (3rd unit) with complete hand instruments
  • UGI Endoscopy Machine (installation completed; pending full functionality)
  • Vessel Sealer Systems (Open & Laparoscopic)
  • Universal Retractor System
  • Surgical Headlights
  • Bair Hugger System (for prevention of perioperative hypothermia)
  • Introduction of Choledochoscope
  • NPWT (Negative Pressure Wound Therapy) System

Additionally, the Surgical ICU at Hatuara Campus has been made partly functional, enabling improved postoperative and critical care management.

6. Emergency & Elective Services

  • Emergency surgical services strengthened at Sadar Campus
  • Elective surgical and OPD services expanded at Hatuara Campus
